Battle of The Border

Battle of The Border against Bonners Ferry

October 4, 2023

By Adriana Granados

The yearly Eureka Lions Battle of the Border is coming to a close in the winter. The Battle of the Border is an athletic competition between the Eureka Lions and the Bonners Ferry Badgers. Each school sport that each school has competes against each other.

The Battle of the Border first began in Fall of 2021 and went to Spring of 2022. This competition is against Bonners Ferry, a small town in Idaho, Southeast of Eureka. This year will be the second year that we will be having this Battle with them. Last year’s battle was from the Fall to the Spring with all the sports that both schools have competing against each other and when they compete, whichever team that won gets that point. Instead of the previous year’s Fall-to-Spring competition, this year, the battle was changed to Winter-to-Winter, so that all sports could be included.

Brendan Miller, the Eureka Lion Athletic Director, said, “The Battle of the Kootenai brought excitement, so after going against Bonners Ferry more, the idea was brought up.” He also was the one that came up with the idea of Battle of The Border.

The point system works as follows: when either team competes against one another, the winning team gains a point. Sports that are currently competing include Football, Volleyball, and Cross Country. An example of this is a Varsity Volleyball game that took place October 3rd, 2023. The Lady Lions swept the Badgers and gained a point.

Currently the Lions are down 7-10 and are waiting for the winter sports to come into play. This year the sports that are helping us are XC (both genders Fall 2023), Softball, Football, XC (both genders Fall 2022), and Volleyball. Bonners Ferry is being helped by the same sports with the addition of Wrestling, Basketball and Track-and-Field. We are waiting for winter sports to add to the points, it looks like Bonners Ferry might win this year.

Last year, Eureka was victorious, winning the Battle of the Border 6-4. The sports that helped win that Battle were Football, Boy’s XC, Volleyball, Girl’s Basketball, Softball, and Boy’s Golf.
