The Eureka Lions Cross Country teams have earned top 3 boys and girls trophies nine consecutive years (14’-22’). The Lions hope to continue this streak this Thursday (Oct 12th) in Thompson Falls. When asked about the divisional meet, sophomore runner Benjamin Hughes said, “The season is going great so far, and I am excited to see what we can do at the divisional meet. Currently, we are ranked third in the division, and placing in the top 3 is a goal every year. This year, a lot of new people have joined, so we should have a strong finish to the season”
This year the favorites on the boys side are Loyola-Sacred Heart and Florence, with St.Ignatius and Lincoln County competing for a most likely third place finish. The Girls side of the race is headlined by Plains and Thompson Falls with Anaconda, Deer Lodge, St.Ignatius, and Lincoln County all battling for the 3-6 spots.
Nobody can perfectly predict the results however, if all teams run their best times of the year the race would pan out as follows: 1st Loyola, 2nd Florence, 3rd LCHS. These results/rankings are just a projection and anything can happen at these meets with injury, weather, and the course that is being run on makes a difference. The girls side doesn’t share any continuity with the boys as their race would finish as 1st Plains, 2nd Thompson Falls, 3rd Anaconda.
The Lions have had a decorated history, not just placing in the top three for so many years but being victorious as well. The boys team took home first place at divisionals in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, four straight first place finishes, along with state titles in 2019 and 2020
Although the boys and girls teams may not be as prevalent as in the past, they are still planning on keeping the streak of placing alive.
