2023 Football Season Wrap-up

By Bryn Van Orden

November 6th

On Saturday November 4th, at 1 o’clock, Lincoln County took on Jefferson in the quarterfinals. The game was located in Eureka on the Lions home field. The Lions knew they had competition ahead of them and came into the game with a lot of energy.

Our captains, AJ Truman, Sullivan Sartori, Tristan Butts, and Caden Pecora, chose to kick off the start of the game.

Jefferson scored the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter, and the Lions answered back with two touchdowns to end the first quarter 14-7. It was a tight scoreboard the whole duration of the game.

By the time the fourth quarter came around the score was 20-20. The game ended up going into overtime with a 26-26 score. Jefferson scored first in overtime and made their extra point. Eureka made their touchdown and went for two to take the one point lead, but it fell incomplete and Jefferson took the game. The final score was 32-33.

The Lions had a remarkable season. They had the skill, drive, dedication, and team chemistry with 15 seniors, one of the best teams seen in Eureka. Statistically, this team broke many records. Quarterback AJ Truman broke the single game passing yards, single season passing yards, single season passing touchdowns. Tristan Butts broke the career interceptions, tied single season interceptions, single-game receiving yards, career receivings yards, season receiving yards, career receiving touchdowns, and single season receiving touchdowns.

Stat leaders throughout the season were Jonus Holm with 90 tackles, Braden Casazza with 10.5 sacks, Butts with 7 interceptions and 356 returning yards, Pecora with 1004 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, Butts with 1002 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns, and lastly Truman with 1898 passing yards and 27 passing touchdowns.

There were a handful of young rising stars including sophomores Josh Lambertson and Rogan Lytle and freshman Joe Banks and Tyce Van Orden. It was a great season all around yet “not all goals were achieved,” said Truman.

The Lions ended their season with a 9-2 record and scored 449 pointsto their opponents 112
