Guro Bartnes Line was born June 15, 2006, in Trondheim, Norway. She is one of the two foreign exchange students this year. Guro is from Trondheim, Norway, and if you look at the map, you would see that it is right in the middle of Norway. She is here to experience what life is like for the average American, and she is going to “graduate here.” I put parentheses on graduating here, because she is here to attend the school and get an experience of what it’s like. This experience will include walking the day of graduation (June 01) as if she were graduating here in Eureka.
Guro’s family consists of her parents, Steinar Line (Father), Maria Bartnes (Mother), her twin siblings Eirin and Jonas (girl and boy), who are two years younger than her. Since her parents are divorced, she has a stepfamily as well. On her father’s side of the family, she has her step mother, Melissa Øyangen and her step brother Edward Øyangen. And on her mother’s side she has her step father Bjørn Villa, her step brother Daniel Villa, and two other step siblings that are older than her but she’s never met them.
Her host family is the Miller’s. They consist of Brenden Miller (Host Father), Dennikka Miller (Host Mother), Brysen and Maura Miller (Host Siblings). Brenden Miller is the Athletic Director in the Eureka, Montana, School District. Dennikka Miller is the resource teacher in the high school at Eureka.
Guro played Volleyball during the fall, she is currently a part of the musical that Sunburst holds at the school, and she is going to be doing Softball in the Spring. During the Fall season, she played Volleyball on the C-Team. When asked about what got her into volleyball she said, “To have an experience with a new sport, be able to make new friends, and have the desire to try something new.” I think that it’s a great experience for her to get better connections with the students and some of the staff that are here. She said that in her experience with the sport, “It was very good. I thought it was very fun and my teammates were nice! The coaches treated us very well. It exceeded my expectations as in how much you could love a sport in such a short amount of time.”
When she was asked about how she did during the season, she said, “I wasn’t athletically the best, but I definitely improved in the short amount of time during the season.” She also wanted to add about how she thought the team did, “I am very proud of the improvement of the team. I felt as though the C-Team did a lot better throughout the season.”
When I asked the Volleyball Coach Todd Brouillete about how he thought Guro did, he said, “First of all volleyball is an extremely hard sport to pick up on. It takes a lot of time and effort. And Guro picked on it very quickly because she worked hard and applied the things she was taught. She also had a great attitude and showed good leadership, and I hope she continues to pursue the sport when she goes home.”
During the Winter season, Guro is not doing any sports, but she is a part of the winter musical that is usually held here at Lincoln County High School which is a part of the Sunburst Arts and Education program. This year’s musical is Firebringer, and it is a comedy about a tribe of stone age people who go through challenges and conflicts on their way to discover fire. Guro is an actor and an assistant director. She is playing Chorn. Chorn is a nonhuman character who is a part of the tribe and can only say her own name.
She’s never had an experience in a musical but she’s had experience singing. She’s done choir for six and a half years starting from fifth grade all the way to eleventh grade. She isn’t doing choir this year because she has a packed schedule and doesn’t have the space for it. However, she’s still getting the musical experience of being able to use her skills from choir for the musical.
During the spring, Guro is going to be doing Softball. She’s never played or participated in softball before. So this is a new experience for her, or she could’ve played something similar back in Norway. When asked if she was excited to play she said, “I’m very excited to play. It’s gonna be very fun.” Also when she was asked about what she is looking forward to she said that she’s excited to, “Have an experience of trying a new sport again. Traveling and having the team spirit again.”
Now on to the academic side of Guro. She is a twelfth grader and her school schedule consists of American History 1 (1st), Pre-Calculus (2nd), Personal Finance (3rd), Creative Writing (4th), MTDA Spanish 3 (5th), Chemistry (6th), and MTDA Criminology (7th). She said that her favorite classes are both of her MTDA classes because she likes to work independently.
Hopefully she has a very good experience here in Eureka, Montana, and takes what she learns and enjoys her time here back home in Norway.
